The attic is one area of the house that often gets forgotten. It’s usually used as a storage space for junk you never use, so you probably don’t go in there that much. Unfortunately, this means that maintenance problems go unnoticed and you end up with serious issues that cause damage throughout the house. If you want to keep your home in good condition, you need to keep up with these important chore jobs in your attic.

Look For Cracks And Holes In The Roof

Damage to the roof is one of the biggest things you need to look out for because once the rain starts leaking through, it will run down the walls of the house and you’ll end up with damp. Small cracks and holes are easily dealt with if you catch them early enough, so get into the attic and check regularly. If you notice any problems, call in some roofers and get them fixed right away. If you neglect them, they will keep getting bigger and you will eventually end up having to replace the roof, which will be very expensive.

Update The Insulation

Your home loses a lot of heat through the roof, so if you want to stay energy efficient, insulation in the attic is crucial. A well-insulated attic will also increase the lifespan of your roof, so you’ll save a lot of money in the long-term. Insulation doesn’t last forever and it gets damaged, so you need to replace it from time to time. If you can’t remember the last time you updated the insulation in your attic, it’s probably time to replace it. Proper insulation is especially important if you want to make the most out of your attic and turn it into a usable space because you need it to be warm up there.

Deal With Pests

The attic is the perfect hiding place for pests, which will then make their way into the rest of the house and cause a lot of problems. Mice and rats will often nest in the attic and get into the insulation and bats also love hiding in the roof too. When you check the attic, you should look out for signs of pests, like droppings, chewed wires, or scratch marks.

You may also hear scuttling around in the ceilings. Making sure that all gaps in the roof and the floors of the attic are blocked will make it harder for pests to get in and spread around the home. If you find that they are already in there, you could try calling for Bat Removal or putting some traps down but this might not be enough to deal with a big infestation. If the problem is getting out of control, you might need to call in a professional exterminator.

Clean Mold

Keeping the roof in good condition and insulating the attic will reduce moisture and prevent mold. However, you may still get a few spots up there and they need to be cleaned right away before they spread. Using a good quality mold cleaner should make it easy to clean off before it becomes a problem.

It’s important to get up into the attic on a regular basis to check it over and make sure that you are on top of these maintenance tasks.
