pile of moving boxes in an empty dining room near patio door 5 common mistakes to avoid when moving house neededinthehome

Let’s be honest here, no one likes relocating; the very thought of packing up all your possessions and a team of strangers loading them onto a truck is enough to cause stress. We’re sure you’ve got out of helping a mate move, citing a fictitious reason why you aren’t able to help, we have many times.

Here are a few common mistakes people make when moving house.

  1. DIY – You might save yourself a bit of money, as long as you have 3 or 4 able-bodied people to help, but it will destroy you all if we are talking about a family-size home. Call a local removalist and let the experts handle everything; you can take the family for a day out in Hunter Valley while a team of removal guys do the work.
  2. No labelling – Imagine packing everything in boxes, loading it on the truck and when you get to the new dwelling, all the boxes look the same! The pros use special labels and sticking them on the sides means you can read them without having to move any. A good removalist would supply all the packing materials and give you the option of packing or leaving it to the team; we understand how some people are uncomfortable with strangers handling their stuff.
  3. No deep clean – If you’re moving into a brand new home, don’t assume it will be clean; dust settles everywhere, even inside cabinets; send a house-cleaning team in a few days prior to the move, otherwise, you’ll be moving into a dust trap. If you’re moving out of a rental property, arrange an end-of-tenancy clean to be sure of getting your deposit back. Click here for a few great home renovation tips.
  4. Poor loading leads to damage – Some people decide to hire a self-drive and load the furniture and crates themselves, which is fine if you know how to tie down a load. Once you are moving, things will settle if they aren’t securely held down. Your possessions are likely of high value and you don’t want to risk any breakages or damage. You should leave this to the removalist; they are fully insured in the unlikely event of an accident, which is comforting.
  5. Hiring the wrong outfit – It can and does happen; while you shouldn’t be price-focused and taking the lowest quote isn’t always the smart thing to do. Joe and his mate might be reliable guys but what happens if they fall ill, or the truck breaks down? You want to be sure that the team arrive on schedule on the day of the move, so hire a known company with a track record and read the online reviews.

If you want a stress-free moving experience hire a registered removal company that offers a comprehensive service. Your possessions are carefully unloaded and placed where you want them to go and you relax with your family and watch the interior take shape.
