You might love being a parent but know that some days you could do a better job. It’s easy to lose your patience when you’re busy running around and working and taking care of a household and kids.
Now is the perfect time to think about what you can be doing better or what you want to do differently this coming year. It’s a great time to revisit your habits and how you live your life and to commit to making some changes. There are eight New Year’s resolution ideas for parents you might want to consider as you begin thinking about this matter.

1. Spend More Quality Time as A Family
You might be very busy most days working a job or investing more time in your career. While it’s good to have goals and future aspirations for yourself you also don’t want it to consume all your time and energy. As a parent, your kids love you and want your full attention when they’re with you. Therefore, you may consider spending more quality time as a family as one New Year’s resolution idea for parents. Not only come up with a list of activities you can do as a family but then be fully present and put your phone down and away when you’re together.
2. Take More Pictures & Videos
You may regret not capturing all the moments and growth stages of your kids someday. Therefore, consider committing to taking more pictures and videos of your kids. You can always get a hard drive to store them on if you take so many that you need more space on your computer. Should you have trouble loading them then check out how to fix a non readable hard drive so you can get to your files. It’ll be fun to look back on all these memories and moments later in life when your kids are older and you want to reminisce.
3. Invest in Yourself & Self-Care
As a busy parent, you might not have a whole lot of time for yourself and your needs. Another New Year’s resolution idea for parents is to invest in themselves and self-care more regularly. You should schedule time into your day and make sure that you never skip out on taking good care of yourself. You’ll feel better, look better, and will be able to better care for your loved ones when you make your health and wellness a priority. You must put forth an effort and rearrange your to-do list at times so that you become the main focus.
4. Practice Active Listening
When you’re busy running around you might be so focused on what you’re doing that you don’t listen to others very attentively. As the New Year approaches, you might want to consider practicing active listening as a parent. You may find that you have better communication with your kids and others this way and that you have deeper bonds and relationships with them. Instead of always doing all the talking, give others your full attention and hear what they have to say and what’s on their mind. You never know when you will have some sound advice to give someone else that might help them in their lives when you are a good listener.
5. Delegate & Ask for Help
As a mom, you might tend to take on all the work and tasks that need to get done on a daily basis. While it’s one way to ensure it gets done, you might be burning yourself out. Stay happy and well by learning to delegate and ask for help when you need it. Reach out and speak up so that others know what you need and in what way they can lend a hand. It might help to have family meetings so that you can assign chores and answer any questions anyone has about the task list. It’ll take some pressure and work off of you and is a great way to teach your kids some responsibility.
6. Slow Down, Rest & Recharge
Another New Year’s resolution idea for parents is to make it a point to rest and recharge more. Take breaks and days and time off from your job to go on a vacation or catch up around the house. Don’t be afraid to take a nap or put your feet up on the weekends instead of always filling your schedule with to-dos and activities. Make it a point to slow down and be more present in the moment so you can truly enjoy your life and get the most out of your days. You’ll discover that you experience less stress and are more in control of your feelings when you slow down and take time to rest.
7. Say Yes More Often
You might be a parent who’s tired and feels overwhelmed at times. However, hiding from the world and saying no a lot may not be good for you, your kids, or your mental health. Instead, try saying yes more often and getting more involved and engaged in life and your community. Find hobbies and activities you all enjoy doing and see what’s out there when it comes to finding productive ways to fill your free time. Try to relax and say yes to your kids (within reason) once in a while too when they’re not expecting it and see how it turns everyone’s mood around for the better.
8. Be A Good Role Model
You may have forgotten amid your busy life that your kids are always watching you. One New Year’s resolution to consider as a parent is to work on being a good role model. Set a proper example for your kids by eating healthily, exercising frequently, and getting enough sleep each night. Show them how to care for a family and house by being an involved and responsible parent. Work on worrying less and connecting more to help build better relationships with others. Show more love and affection daily and remember to focus on the positives and what’s going well to help keep your spirits high.
