Why would you want to work in the public sector? courtroom and seats neededinthehome

The ever-lasting battle between private and public; which is the better sector? If you would like to go for the money, go for the private sector. So why would you want to work in the public sector?

If you would like to serve the country somehow, go for the public sector. Wait a minute, those are huge generalizations aren’t they? Yes and no. they’re kind of true, but millions of people who work in the private sector serve the public sector too. For example, the government awards private company many military contracts. The most advanced nations in the world, have service rifles that come from privately-owned companies. However, the public sector is often elusive for most of us. How do you get in? What kinds of jobs are there? Is the promotion progression the same? What’s at the top of the tree in terms of most senior positions?

A clear motivation

Most people who work in the public sector have a clear motivation. They want to serve the country somehow and they want to be a part of running the nation. It takes a lot of pride and motivation to work in the public sector because you’re providing some kind of service, not to a small niche customer base, but the entire country. Therefore, if you would like to see your country improve, see it develop and tackle injustices that you see in your daily life, working in the public sector will feel natural to you.

Helping local people

The overwhelming percentage of public jobs is not pertaining to large government institutions. It's actually at a local level. Firefighters, police officers, welfare and the courts are all public sector fields but they are ultimately local services. If you have a deep affinity for your city or state and would like to see it become far better than the state it's currently in, working in the public sector makes perfect sense. You’ll be part of the community fabric which is incredibly satisfying. It's also a way of giving back to the neighborhoods you grew up in and becoming a key figure for the next generation to look up to.

The nation’s security

The public sector is mostly filled with jobs at the local level. States and cities will have the majority of the nation’s public servants working within their jurisdictions. However, if you would like to aim for the holy grail and work for the government, there are plenty of opportunities in national security. Take for example the online Master’s of Science in Management Information Systems from the University of Alabama Birmingham. Earning such a degree would clear the way for you to join the National Security Agency (NSA). You’ll learn how to program, code and defend against attacks from cyber-criminals. These skills are transferable to the private sector as businesses need similar protection.

It takes a different kind of person to work in the public sector. You’re not in it for the money or the fame, you’re just trying to help your city, state and or country become a better and safer place to live.
