If you feel as if your career is in freefall, you’re not the only one. With over 10 million unemployed people in the US alone, the pandemic has obviously had a terrible impact on the economy and peoples’ lives. Even worse, being stuck at home gives the impression you’re helpless. But, you're not. Here are steps to give your career a push.

Well, you’re not. Regardless of the situation, there is always a silver lining. It’s hard to find when times are challenging, but they are there nonetheless. For example, extra free time allows you to take a step back and evaluate your position. By doing this, you can see the mistakes you have made and attempt to rectify them.

You should take a broader view of life as soon as you get the opportunity. That includes inside and outside of a lockdown. When you do, you might find the following to help maximize your time, energy, and earning power.

Skills Expansion

There is never a bad time to expand your skillset. Some periods are better than others. After all, you would be in a better position if you completed a crisis management course in February of 2020. Still, the wrong thing to do is to view it as a lost opportunity. Instead, you should do it regardless.

By enrolling in a course, in-person or online, you become a much better candidate on paper. A resume isn’t everything, yet you need it to stand out if you’re going to stand out in a saturated marketplace. Anything that enhances you as an employee will be a tick in your box.

Don’t worry if you’re an entrepreneur as courses designed for bosses are also available. If you recognize that you need help leading people, you can listen to a leadership webinar or take a course. The online resources available today are endless, as is your ability to expand your skills.

List Your Accomplishments

You shouldn’t underestimate the power of positive thinking. When you’re flat and you need a boost, the key is often as simple as focusing on your strengths. It’s human nature to concentrate on your weaknesses, which only exacerbates the situation.

Rather than going through them in your head, you should codify them so that they are real and concrete. Remember that your memory isn’t infallible, so you might forget some incredible things that pop into your head. Writing a list, whether on paper or a mobile device, is a simple-yet-effective strategy since it lets you refer to your accomplishments later.

If you’re struggling, you can ask yourself, “what did I do, and what was the result?” The process should offer greater detail to boost your mood and motivation levels.

And Identify What They Make You Good At

The next step is probably the most important for two reasons. Firstly, identifying what you’re good at allows you to evaluate your strengths and weaknesses. By focusing on the latter, you can level-up, giving yourself a higher chance of a promotion, or something to this effect.

Secondly, it highlights the different roles you can lean on should the worst happen, or you decide to make a career change. And, it doesn’t have to be backed up by facts and figures. For example, you could realize that you’re very effective at helping people through tough times. In this case, a healthcare role would suit you down to the ground, especially as you can choose an online nurse practitioner program and get started instantly.

Please don’t assume that the job market is dead and no one is hiring. There is a slump, yet there are particular industries that are thriving and on the lookout for passionate and accomplished recruits.

Think About What More You Can Do

Giving your career a push centers on being proactive. Sadly, it’s not easy when the climate is gloomy. When all you hear on the news is death and despair, you’re bound to make the connection between your personal and work life.

A poor attitude will stop you from going the extra mile, something that is imperative during a crisis. So, merely asking yourself what more you can do is usually enough to kickstart your new perspective. Once you understand that you’re not doing enough, you should try to fix the problem by writing a blog, serving on boards, tutoring, launching a business, or whatever excites you.

Even if you don’t think they’ll directly affect your career, you need to develop a can-do mentality that pushes you to achieve more. Otherwise, you’ll end up stagnating.

How do you plan on deliberately maneuvering your career into position?
