Here are five tips to help you plan for a move the right way.

1. Come up with a to-do list

Before anything else, you need to make a list of the tasks you want to complete for your move. Are you selling stuff? When do you want to move?

After you’ve answered these essential questions, make a detailed task list of which rooms you want to start with and when you want to complete each one. This will help you navigate the move much easier.

2. Declutter your space

Before you start packing, take time to look around the house and decide what you’re bringing with you to the new home and what you need to get rid of.

Decluttering your space will help you reduce the number of boxes when moving, and in turn, lower the costs of moving.

Start by donating to charity or holding garage sales if necessary. Things that have no more use should not be cluttering your space.

3. Look for and book a removal company

Decide whether you want to move your belongings yourself or have a moving company do the work for you. If you’re moving states, you can always book interstate movers so that you don’t have to pay hundreds of dollars in gas money driving back and forth between the states.

There are many options available for both packing and unpacking. Assess what option suits you best so that you don’t end up paying more for moving costs than you expected.

4. Start packing the least used rooms and move on to the rest

When the time comes that you want to fill the very first box, you might get overwhelmed and not know what to pack first.

Begin with the rooms which you use the least. The garage, attic, a storage unit, or the unoccupied guest bedroom are good places to start than, for example, the bathroom you use every day.

After you’re done with the least used items, move on to the next on the list. Try to start the packing process as soon as possible.

5.  Make an inventory of the rooms you’ve packed

After you’ve filled a room, try to make an inventory of all the items loaded in the boxes. Doing this will help you organize your moving plans and keep an eye on everything you wish to take with you to the new house.

Sometimes moving companies make an inventory for the household items, so it’s also a good idea to ask the movers to create a list of your belongings.

Bottom Line

Whether you were rushed into deciding to move within a month, or you had several months to start packing, moving houses can become overwhelming. The important thing is to give yourself time to plan and organize the move to the best of your abilities.

You can always ask relatives or friends to help you with the move, and you will also spend time with your loved ones while you’re doing something you’d rather not do.

Don’t forget to look after yourself and treat yourself too! During stressful moving times, it’s easy to neglect your health. So allow yourself some time to do fun activities in between all the back and forth running.
