Windows come in many different styles. When choosing the right type of window, it’s important to consider the individual benefits that different styles of window have. Below are just some of the important factors to consider when choosing a style of window.

Windows come in many different styles. When choosing the right type of window, it’s important to consider the individual benefits that different styles of window have. Below are just some of the important factors to consider when choosing a style of window.

Space

The size of the window you choose is likely to depend on how much wall space you have to work with. If you’re replacing an existing window, it could be worth choosing a window of the same size so that you‘re not having to spend extra money removing brick to expand the hole. If you’re adding a new window into a wall, you may have more flexibility when it comes to size, although you do need to consider pipes and wires within the wall.

On top of considering how big the window is, consider how it will open. Inward-opening windows require more space inside and may not be suitable for narrow corridors or small rooms. Outward-opening windows require more space outside and may not be suitable for homes facing directly onto narrow sidewalks.

Security

Security is something everyone should consider when choosing windows, but it could be particularly important if you live in an area with a burglary problem. Some styles of window are more secure than others. For example, casement windows as available here are much harder to break in than sash windows.

There are a few small features that can help to make windows more secure. Interior window locks are one option that can prevent windows being pried open. Double pane glass or reinforced glass can meanwhile make windows harder to shutter. Then there’s the option of window grills or bars – these can make it impossible for a burglar to climb through, although they can have a slightly hostile look.

Of course, you can make any type of window more secure by making small modifications. Exterior shutters can make almost any window impenetrable

Ventilation

Some windows also offer better ventilation than others. Picture windows are windows that cannot be opened and offer no ventilation – these are not suitable for spaces like kitchens and bathrooms. Instead, you’re better off opting for windows that can be opened wide to let in a lot of air.

Windows can be fitted with trickle vents to still allow some ventilation even when shut. Extractor fans can also be installed alongside windows for extra ventilation.

Safety

Safety could be a concern for upper level windows that are accessible by young kids. There are a few different features you can consider in order to make windows safer. One option is window restrictors to only allow windows to be opened a small amount. Window locks can also prevent young kids opening windows themselves.

You can also opt for two windows on top of each other and allow only the top window to be opened. Of course, picture windows that cannot be opened at all are also an option.

Insulation

Insulation could also be an important factor to consider. By buying the right windows, you can limit heat loss and keep a room warmer longer. This could be vital for homes located in colder regions – particularly windows in north facing rooms.

Modern vinyl window frames are very well insulated, however you can increase insulation further with timber and aluminum clad windows. Double pane windows are essential for reducing heat loss through glass – if you want added insulation, you could even consider triple pane windows. Thermal efficiency of windows is measured using a scale known as the u value with 0.2 being the best and 1.2 being the worst. When comparing styles of windows, check the u value and make sure that it is relatively low.

It’s worth noting that any window can be made more thermally efficient by installing extras like shutters, thick curtains or window insulating film. If you don’t want to spend extra on heavily insulated windows, consider these options.

Privacy

You may not want passers by or neighbors to be able to stare directly into certain windows (i.e. bathroom windows). Features like frosted glass, stained glass and glass blocks can all distort the view into a window while still letting light through. Just be wary that the view out of the window will be reduced too.

Obviously, features like voile curtains and blinds can help to offer privacy too. These could be fitted over clear glass windows, enabling privacy when you need it, while also offering a view out of the window when necessary.

Cost

Finally, it’s important to consider the cost of different window styles. Solid wood windows may look fantastic and offer great insulation, but they will cost significantly more than vinyl windows. Similarly, triple pane windows or reinforced glass will cost more.

Know your budget and prioritize the window features that you need. Remember that there are other ways to make windows more secure or energy-efficient such as adding shutters or curtains.
