We all want to live in a greener and healthier home, especially if we’re bringing up children. They deserve to live a non-toxic, fresh and happy life and feel at ease in the house they are growing up in. Equally, it is really important that we strive to protect the environment and look after our lovely homes. There are many things that we could all improve on in order to keep the family safe and increase your home’s value.

Do you have a list of things that you have been meaning to tend to at home? It is understandable that life gets in the way sometimes and often we overlook the little things that are happening. We can turn a blind eye to small problems that are building up over time. Instead of tackling them head on, we let them linger and get worse. Don’t let your house get into a state of disrepair; try and keep on top of the deep cleaning and overall health of your home and you will be able to live a much more satisfied life. Knowing that your children are absorbing fresh air and sleeping in a pest free environment is our duty of care as parents. Let us assess the little things that could be going wrong for you and get them straightened out now.

1. Pest Peek-a-boo

At some stage in your life you will have to deal with unwanted pests or vermin in and around your home. Whether it is pesky mice or troublesome millipedes, you need to know how to deal with these annoyances safely. If you are being invaded with unwanted bugs or rodents, there are a handful of home remedies you can try. For example, it is said that vinegar deters ants and other tiny insects. These home remedies can only work to a certain extent. If you’re having a major pest problem, you should always seek out the expertise of a pest control company. They will be able to remove the threat in the safest possible way, and will cause minimal damage to your property in the process.

2. Ditch The Damp

Mold and mildew can creep up on us and build up on the insides of our walls without even noticing. The fumes that are emitted from damp and damaged materials can be toxic, especially to pets and children. Make sure you’re regularly checking the walls for any small amount of build-up and wipe it away with a specialist cleaning product as quickly as you can. In order to prevent damp from appearing in your home, you should always open your windows and air out any enclosed spaces. The bathroom and kitchen can be extremely susceptible to mold due to the large amount of water and steam that builds up in the air. Consider using an air purifier to get rid of any moisture in the air whilst you’re drying laundry too.

3. Rubbish Repair

You put your garbage out every week as you are meant to, but each time the bins seem to be riddled with critters and creatures. Outdoor wildlife such as raccoons and foxes can rummage in your bin bags overnight as they are attracted to the smell of the food waste you are throwing away. Try to shun them away by putting a heavy item such as a large brick on top of the lid so that your rubbish stays contained. If possible, put your trash out as late as possible so that you are not leaving it exposed overnight. There are also certain scents which you can use to warn them off and stop the pesky creatures from spreading litter across your driveway.

4. Happy Housework

We all enjoy a deep spring clean every so often, but I bet you didn’t know that your cleaning products could be damaging to your health. Many sprays contain highly toxic chemicals which are automatically brought into the atmosphere of your home as soon as you spritz them onto your surfaces. Try making your own natural and organic cleaning products as a non-toxic alternative. There are many amazing ways to clean the different areas of your household using minimal chemicals. Products such as bicarbonate of soda, lemon juice and vinegar can be found in your store cupboards at home and will kill bacteria just as well as the other cleaning brands out there.

5. Alarm Alerts

Every parent has the fear of waking up to a dangerous situation such as a fire or gas leak in your house. You see terrifying situations like this all the time in the movies and you never really expect that it can happen to you. You can try to avoid these situations as much as possible, by taking the relevant precautions. Make sure you change the batteries in your fire alarm and test it on a regular basis. At least every two weeks you should check that your alarm is fully functioning. There are also alarms for Carbon Monoxide which could be potentially lifesaving. Dangerous gases can be emitted from cookers and ovens and are mostly undetectable. Having one of these alarms in your kitchen could save your family’s life.

6. Clear The Air

There are many ways in which you can create a cleaner air and atmosphere in your home. It goes without saying that smoking can cause hazardous fumes in the air for your family and you should never smoke inside the house. It can also help to grow green plants inside the house as they have natural properties which can kill nasty bugs in the air. They have the power to absorb harmful pollutants from materials, furniture and carpets, so opt for spider plants and palm trees to keep your air fresh.

So give your home the love and care it deserves and make your dwelling a desirable one. Allow your children to grow up in the healthiest environment possible and teach them how to look after a household. There is no correct way to live, but there is most definitely a greener way to carry out our day to day lives. Get those small grumbles straightened out once and for all and you won’t have to worry about unexpected visitors, toxic atmospheres and unclean spaces.
