Windows
If there are lots of gaps and holes in your windows then they will be letting the cold in. This is a waste of your heating as it will be costing you money for the heat to escape out the cracks. You should get these fixed before winter hits as you don’t want to be shivering while chilling at home. A quick once over with a sealer will give you enough coverage to get through the winter. If your windows are particularly old then you will need to get these replaced at some point. Over time windows deteriorate as they are faced with the many outside elements. Window companies will have sales at various points throughout the year if you are looking to save money.
Flooring
What flooring do you currently have in your home? If you have hardwood flooring then this could be contributing to the cold air you feel in the colder months traveling through your house. Hardwood flooring, while great for the warmer months, isn't too kind on your feet during winter. It can feel quite harsh to walk on or even sit on. If you don’t want to completely change your flooring then you might want to consider adding a rug to the floor you use, the bedroom or living room for example.
Alternatively, you could totally switch your flooring to carpet. This will give a soft fluffy feel under your feet and naturally feel warmer as you walk through your home.
Paint The Walls
You might be wondering why you should paint your walls to get you through winter. Well if you have light, whiter walls then your home will be naturally cooler. If you paint your walls a darker color such as gray or dark blue then they will feel and look warmer. You will have to work out which walls you want to be darker through your home as you don’t want to do them all a darker color. Your home will end up looking dark and dingy if you’re not too careful with that paintbrush. If you notice your walls aren’t too smooth then you can sand them down before you give your walls a fresh coat of paint.
Check Your Generator
If you have a generator on your property then you will need to get these regularly serviced to ensure they are in full working order. You can contact a local electrician who will be able to check this out for you. The last thing you want this winter is for your generator to break down. If you rely heavily on your generator then you will know the importance of keeping it serviced and working.
Hopefully you found this article helpful and that it gave you some top tips on how you can better manage your home this winter. Keeping it warm is key to being comfortable and not wasting money during the cooler months.
