Ahh, summer! School is out, schedules are finally open, and it’s time to enjoy pool visits, backyard barbeques, vacations, and pests? Yes, unfortunately, while summer can be grand, it can also bring a variety of issues to your home that requires maintenance, repairs, and sometimes intervention. From mold to air-conditioning problems and unwanted house guests, these common household issues are annoying, but they don’t have to ruin your summer or break your budget.

Let’s break down three of the most common problems likely to interfere with your summer at home and how to handle them.

Mold

Mold and summer go hand-in-hand, and if not caught early, this one can cost you big time. The number one thing mold needs to grow is moisture. Think wet pool towels discarded on the floor, wet boots fresh from an afternoon of play, or swimsuits buried in the laundry pile — all mold’s best friends.

To prevent mold from growing in your home:

  • Control the humidity by keeping ceiling fans on and airflow consistent throughout the day.
  • Designate a place for all wet items to be placed and then wash them promptly.
  • Regulate the temperature, keeping the house thermostat set in the low 70s whenever possible.
  • Act quickly if you do see mold forming — use commercial-grade cleaners to tackle it initially and if it’s not resolving on its own, hire a professional.

HVAC issues

There’s nothing worse than returning home from the office or an outdoor adventure and discovering it’s hotter inside the house than it is outside. HVAC issues are pervasive in the summer months when air conditioning runs 24/7, especially on older or outdated equipment. Homeowners can prevent major malfunctions with regular home maintenance, but if your air conditioning is no longer working correctly, it’s time to hire a professional.

Bugs, bats, and squirrels

Everyone loves summer sleepovers, out of town guests, and family visits but unwanted pests — that’s another story! With windows open, warm temperatures, and food in all kinds of areas, the chances of bugs, bats or squirrels sneaking into your home are exceptionally high in the summer months. For this reason, it is important that you understand the squirrel in attic removal cost should such a scenario fall upon you.

Rodents, infestations, nesting birds, and insects are attracted by gutter debris accumulation. And, these nasty critters can significantly be hazardous for your family. Although it may be easy to overlook your gutters, know that these are vital for your roof and home protection.

Thus, when you visit an expert roofing company’s website, click here on the service section and see what professionals can help you with.

Bugs can be a nuisance but are usually quickly addressed through citronella candles, bug zappers, or repairing any broken screens. While creepy and not the friendliest creatures, bats, too, can be a harmless pest. They often find their way through open windows and doors and will find a nice, dark place to nestle for the night (check those closets).

However, if you have ever wondered, “why do I need bats removing?” you might be better off knowing that bats are known carriers of various diseases, and having them inside your home can pose serious health risks. For that reason, it’s strongly recommended to hire a professional who is trained in safe and humane bat removal.

Squirrels are notorious for finding their way in through attics, gutters, and small cracks in your exterior foundation. If you do find yourself with a squirrel in your home, and you know where it entered, you can try to lure it back out the same way it entered and then quickly repair the hole. Another humane way to remove the squirrel is to set a live trap using a little peanut butter — something that’s hard for squirrels to resist! If all else fails, it’s probably time to call a squirrel removal expert to get some help!

Summer should be a time to relax, unwind, and enjoy a slower pace. While home issues like these can put a damper on the fun, they don’t have to ruin your entire summer. Tackle them as they come, and remember that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
