The hallway: the one room in the home where dark lighting, bare walls, and a creepy atmosphere often go completely unchallenged!
Indeed, many home hallways (whether upstairs or down) are no-light areas without windows, and at night, they get super dark and a little bit scary!

But we can help you fix that. If you’ve got a hallway in your home that’s letting down the general decor, there are a few design tips you can use to make it just look and feel just as special as every other room in your home. Let’s go through a few of the best below!

Place a Seat Near the Door
Ever considered hallway seating? It’s incredibly practical! After all, not only is it a comfy addition, but it gives you somewhere to sit while you put your shoes on (or help your child on with theirs).
And if you’ve got the space for it, we highly recommend having a seat as near to your front door as possible.
If you can, try to invest in a chair (or stool) that has storage built into it. An ottoman seat, for example, or a drawer you can slide under the bottom of the seat base. This way you get a bit more storage within the hallway (for things like shoes and bags) without needing any extra space.
Change Your Staircase Handrails
Most hallways have the staircase slap bang right there in the center, and very much act as the focal point of the entire space. As such, you may want to give the staircase itself a bit of a makeover!
One of the most impactful changes here is replacing the bannister and/or handrails fitted on your staircase.
Get yourself a set of custom metal handrails equipped either side and you can dramatically change both the light and spacing issues you could be dealing with. Smaller and sleeker handrails can make smaller hallways a lot easier to move through!
No Natural Lighting? Create a Faux Effect
Does your hallway have a window in it? If it does, you’re one of the rare few! Of course, many homes have doors with windows built in, allowing light to flow through the hallway.
But even then, these windows can offer limited natural sunshine – and are probably frosted if they’re not just at the top of the door.
As such, you may want to create a faux natural lighting effect to brighten the space. Hang up a mirror on the wall that gets the most natural light (and make sure it’s a sizeable mirror!), and have that reflect much more of the sun around the space.
Similarly, swap out warm light bulbs for daylight variants, and try to keep hallway paint tones on the lighter side too.
Hallways deserve to have character too! Make sure the hallway in your home is just as specially decorated as every other room. Remember, the hallway is the entrance to your home, and it should feel welcoming enough!
