We all know that being a parent is not easy. Far from it to be honest with you. While everyone’s journey in parenting is different, we should all reassure ourselves from time to time that we are doing an awesome job. There is no doubt that you will get to the end of the day and instead of focusing on what you have done well you will think about the things you could have done better.

This is where parental guilt can really take its toll on you. But it doesn’t need to be this way. Parenting is different for everyone, and no child is the same. Which means that no parenting style is the same.

It is always good to hear that you are doing a good job. It might be that you hear it from friends and family members, but often it is the conversation that you have with yourself that can be the most important one. Do you tell yourself that you are doing a good job? The chances are you will find that hard to do for one reason or another. However, if you feel you need more concrete evidence than just the words then here are some of the ways you could be reassuring yourself.

Saving for your child’s future

Many parents will take a moment to stop and think about their child’s future at some point. Be that if they want to continue education and go to university, whether it is traveling and seeing the world or settling into a career or job. We do what we can which is why we try and save as much as we can from those early days. If you want to do this yourself a quick look online for a savings account you could try will help you identify the best thing for you. Saving their Christmas or birthday money they receive, little amounts here and there from you, it can all add up. Not many people think about this early on but the sooner you start to save for your family's future the better things will be. It can be a simple yet very effective thing that you can do to help your child in the future and also help you personally with your finances. These savings can be used to finance birthdays and Christmas in the future, or even help to fund things like school uniform costs.

Doing your best to encourage your child to eat well

When you sit with your child at every meal time willing them to just try that vegetable without success. When you go out of your way to make their favorite food just because you know they will eat it. The fussy eating phase that most children go through can be really difficult for parents. But reassure yourself that you are doing your best. Hiding vegetables in sauces, encouraging them and being supportive, that is all you can do when it comes to this. Just remember it is a phase. Eating can be one of the biggest issues parents face in their day to } lives. Getting your children to eat their food, to help them with their nutrition and also encourage good eating habits is a daily battle most parents face. However, you do what you can. There are so many recipes online that can help you to find the best options to encourage good health and wellbeing when it comes to diet.

Spending time with your children

Sometimes it is the simplest of things that we overlook that can often be the most beneficial when it comes to our children. If you do things such as play games with your children, spend time with them aside from helping with homework or general errands you have to do, then this can be a big thing in your child's life. You could try something like shared reading, where you both spend time reading together. There is a lot of evidence supporting the importance of shared reading and this can be a great way to spend some time with your children. You could also play board games or card games, you could try different things such as arts and crafts, or activities outside. The more you spend time with your children doing things they enjoy, the more you can develop your bond. A simple but yet very effective thing to do to help cement the fact that you are doing your best.

Teaching your children life skills

Sitting in a hot swimming pool each week as you watch your child learn to swim. Working out ways to teach them about their emotions, and to show compassion and empathy towards others. Teaching them the value of money and not to expect things all of the time. These are life skills that you are teaching your children, and by doing so, you are helping them to become amazing individuals. The more you can focus on this side of things, the more well rounded your children will be. It can also be small things that you do each day without even realizing that will help you to understand and reassure yourself that you are doing a good job. Things such as tying shoe laces and learning to tell the time. Cooking and understanding how to do basic things in the kitchen and even taking care of themselves such as tidying their bedroom. These can be a great way to teach children life skills and also assure you that by doing so you are doing the best job you can as a parent.

Helping your child with homework and studies

It may feel grueling, but sitting there helping with homework or teaching your child to read and write is one of those things that many parents hate to do. But supporting them means that your child is less likely to struggle in the school environment, and by doing so you are only doing your best to help and guide them on their journey. Many of us have had to homeschool this last year and understanding the concepts and ways our children learn has both been a learning curve for parents and children alike. Many parents have reported feeling like they are not good enough because of the issues and emotions that have become apparent when it comes to homeschooling. But the very fact that you did it, you did your best, you helped where you could has meant that you have done such a good job. Make sure you commend yourself for that.

Having a good routine

Finally, there may be sleepless nights, there may be times where you just feel at the end of your tether, but being a parent is not easy. However, what you do is establish a routine, and whether that is strictly or fairly loosely based around times of the day, a routine will be in place. Having that will help your child thrive and know what to expect. You are doing your best. A routine can help you to manage expectations and also help your child to thrive, rest when they can and also do what you can to help your family move forward. A routine will naturally happen anyway so understanding that should assure you that you are doing the bets you can.

Let’s hope that highlighting some of these things will reassure you that the things you do daily, weekly or so on, means you are doing the best you can. ‘
