The rise of cyber crime has not only highlighted areas of weakness in company and institutional security policy, but also significant skills gaps. Cyber security professionals with IT skills are now in demand more than ever before.

The info-graphic below provides an in-depth insight into the scale of cyber crime and the potential impact on organizations. In 2013 alone, there was a 91% increase in targeted attack campaigns and a 62% increase in security breaches. Half of security professionals believe their agencies are likely to come under attack.
The effects of cyber crime are far-ranging. The cost of cyber attacks is increasing, but for most businesses, the most crucial consideration is reputation. Businesses and organizations want to be trusted, and a breach can put years of hard work at risk. For 83% of companies, taking steps to protect and restore reputation is the top priority.
The demand for employees with skills in cyber security has grown 3.5 times faster than other IT jobs, and there was a 73% increase in the number of adverts for information security between 2007 and 2012. This equates to a rate 67% higher than growth rates for all jobs.
The increased prevalence of cyber crime has undoubtedly prompted organizations to search for skilled workers, with 56% of companies claiming they have too few employees in this field. For IT professionals, there is a golden opportunity to diversify their skill set to command higher salaries, and for those looking to get onto the career ladder, gaining cyber security skills is an excellent way to secure a top job.
