If you have lived in your home for quite some time or if you know that you have just bought an older property and you want to find out if you need a new roof or not, then you will understand how daunting this decision can be. After all, a new roof can cost thousands and it is essential to your home. After all, you may have heard the phrase “a roof over your head” so if your roof is looking a little worse for wear then you really do have to get the whole thing sorted out as soon as possible.

Start at the Top

When you are looking at your roofing, you’ll want to start from the top. It is actually recommended that you look at your roof at least two times a year. This is especially the case after winter because the ice and the cold can wreak havoc on your shingles. It’s very important that you don’t grab the next pair of ladders you see and venture the top of your roof in this instance because you should always leave things like this to the professionals.  Roofing is a specialization and getting a professional roofing company or roofing expert to examine your roof is highly recommended. Instead, you’ll want to go up into your attic and take a look at it from the inside. If you do have any problems then you will be able to see signs of it here. Things that you’ll want to look out for include the roof sagging in parts and you’ll also want to look out for any signs of water damage as well.

Checking the Outside

If you do have an older property, then you have to check over the exterior of the roof. Pay attention to anything that looks to be out of the ordinary. You’ll also want to look out for any flashing that may be damaged and any signs of rot as well. You should be able to do this inspection without climbing up any ladders, so stand back and get a good look at the roof. You should also look out for green growths on the roof and even signs of discoloration. This could be a sign that your roof is experiencing rot or even algae growth, and if this is the case then you have to contact professional roofers out as soon as you possibly can.

Grains of Sand

If you suspect that you have damaged shingles then look out for granules or even grains of sand. These are usually found in the gutter and they can be a sign of really advanced wear. If you are experiencing something like this then there is a high chance that you will need to get your roof looked at by a professional. If you do have damaged shingles, then this could lead to your roof tiles falling off and it is one of the main causes of leaks as well. So if you would like to get this issue sorted out, then make sure that you diagnose it properly before getting a professional to take a look. Shingle grains can really block your drains as well, so don’t delay when you are getting the issue looked at.
