So your kid’s birthday is around the corner and you want to get them a thoughtful gift. Or maybe you just want to reward them for one of their achievements. Gifts equally offer up a great way to keep them busy during their summer break. Regardless of the motivation, buying a present for a kid isn’t always as easy as picking out a random toy at the store. So how do you get a gift that your little one will love and appreciate? To nudge you in the right direction, here are five helpful tips for choosing gifts for your kid.

  1. Consider their age

When picking out a gift for a kid, the first thing to think about is their age. There are some presents that are age-appropriate for a 5-year-old but not for a 10 year old. To help you out, most toys come with advice on age appropriateness, that should put you in the right neighborhood while you're searching. But don't just rely on the manufacturer's recommendations, equally consider your child's level of development.

You know them better than anyone, so, to some extent can rely on your judgment. Is your child ready for a two-wheeler bike instead of a tricycle? Think about this on an individual level and consider these things before making your purchase.

  1. Pick toys that can help them learn

A good way to teach kids is by using their toys; you can teach a kid responsibility and how to clean up after themselves by buying them a personalized toy chest so they can arrange their toys when they’re done playing. You can also pick out toys that encourage creativity, like Legos, or options that teach alphabets and numeracy for the littler kids.

  1. Keep safety in mind

As much as you want to get your kid the coolest gift out there, don’t forget about safety. In this aspect, it's increasingly important to search for age-appropriate toys. You see, some toys are considered unsafe for certain age groups since they come with little parts that pose a choking hazard.

Even if you have older kids, there are toys that contain toxic chemicals and dyes that could be harmful to them in the long run. Before buying a toy, go through the list of materials used to make it, it may seem a little much, but it's imperative.

  1. Think long-lasting presents

It's not the greatest idea to buy a gift that contributes to the world's large amount of waste, so how about buying your kid a gift they can use for years down the line? For example, a bicycle is something that can be used for years and even passed down to the younger ones.

  1. Consider gifts that can be shared

If you have more than one kid, it's a good gift idea to buy your kid a toy that he or she can share with their siblings or friends. A present like a board game or a puzzle can help build a healthy and fun relationship between kids. Even better, gifts like these can equally last a long time, so you’re essentially killing two birds with one stone.
