Decluttering Your Garage? 4 Simple Tips To Remember

Statistics indicate that 36% of Americans have cluttered garages that can’t accommodate their cars. Indeed, this area is where most people store their items to free up indoor space. But adding things to your garage without any structure can be detrimental. And before you realize it, your car stays permanently parked outdoors. Running out of space in your garage can be a real headache, but you can solve this with the right tips. Here's how to declutter this area effectively.

Start with your plan of action

The first thing you want to do is devise a plan of action. Don't be tempted to skip this step; you may spend hours without an action plan. Make a to-do list stating the different steps you need to take. For example, how much time do you want to spend decluttering each day? What will you do with the stuff you don't need? Will you need storage bins, cardboard, and trash bags? Do you plan to relocate any of the things in the garage back into your main indoor space? Questions like these will help you create your plan of action, so keep this in mind.

Get rid of everything you don't need or use

If an item has been in your garage for over a year, you no longer need it, and it's time to let it go. It's easy to convince yourself that you'll utilise something in the future, even though you haven't used it for over a year. But that will only make creating the space you need urgently difficult. So, items you haven't used or seen in years should go. If those items are still valuable, you can sell them in a garage sale or donate them to other people.

Start with specific areas

Don't just start anywhere; that could waste time. Instead, pick one spot in your garage and start working from there. It could be a shelf, a toolbox, or a corner of your garage, so feel free to consider this. Next, decide how much time you'll spend in that spot. Of course, that'll depend on how much stuff you have to clear, so kep this in mind. It’s worth noting that setting a time limit is important as it keeps you from wasting time on unnecessary distractions. It also allows you to handle other responsibilities without spending all day in the garage.

Decide on your ideal garage storage solution

Once you clear your first spot, you must decide how best to store the things you still need in the garage. You can consider efficient garage storage solutions like shelves, ground lockers, and storage containers. You can also invest in an over-bonnet storage locker designed to hang above your car's bonnet, utilizing otherwise unused space. Also, consider alternative storage options outside the garage. For example, you can invest in apartment storage cages or contact a storage company. An external storage solution will be excellent for items you still need but can't keep at home.
