Family Room DIY Home Decor Ideas Using Fonts

Are you tired of your family room DIY home decor? Why not put a little of your own family style and personality into it? One way to do this is to design your own, have it printed, frame it and hang it up. You are sure to receive compliments. Yet, if you ever tire of it, you can do it again! Here is how to do it with writing on it…

Consider What Size Your Picture Should Be

I have a seven foot wide couch and I want to put three poster size (36″ long by 24″ wide) pictures above it for this example. I am thinking of using mostly wording with a little decor around it. We sometimes use our family room to play games on family game night, as well as use it for watching a movie together as a family on our big screen television. So, I want the wording to be family or quality time themed.

Get On a Platform To Create The Artwork

I really like to use Canva. You can get a free account to use. You need to create an account or sign in if you already have one. Select “Custom Size” and adjust to your final printable measurement desired. Select “Create New Design” under your measurements and you are now on the page where you can make your art piece.

Find The Fonts

First you need to find the font style you would like to use. I am trying to do this on the cheap as I am saving money for a family vacation coming up, so I am going to use free fonts for this example. If you don't already have a free account, you can set up one. Or just sign in and choose the design you want.

Currently, I am in love with the Joyfully Cute and Playful typeface with it's plump strokes and whimsical look, so I am going to use that one for my designs. I select the green download button. Now the font is sitting in a zip file at the bottom of my page. I am also going to use Ink Line for my lower case and numbers.

Upload The Font

Go back to your design on Canva. On the left side, select “add a heading” and type a word in there. I will use “Quality Time.” In the upper left part of your work area, you can see the name of a font. Click on that. At the bottom of this font list, click “Upload A Font.” Under the “Brand Fonts” area, click “Upload A Font.” Select your font (make sure it’s the actual font file and not the zipped folder) and upload. Refresh your page. Select your text and go to the font drop down box and find your new font and select it. Adjust to your size and color. You can drag the design to where you want it on the page as well.

Add A Border

On the left side of the page, click “Elements” and type in the word “border” in the search box. I chose one I liked and clicked it, then put it on top of my wording. To get it to go to the back with the wording in front, I right clicked that area and selected “Send Backward.” You can add any adjustments you like, then name your piece up at the top of the page. I have Canva Pro so my borders might be different than those available to you for the free version.

Save Your Design

Click Download and select PDF Print. Now your file is saved. I like to send this to my email for when I go to a print shop to have it printed out. I usually choose cardstock or poster paper.

Sell Your Design?

If your friends absolutely love your design and you think it would be a good one to sell, why not sell it on Etsy? Just double check that you have proper licensing for resale. Read your agreement carefully for fonts, photos, backgrounds, etc.

Get a Frame and Hang It Up

Next, you can buy a poster frame to hang your design up and place them on your wall.
