Whether you are thinking of starting a family or you want to improve the quality of an existing family unit, you are in the right place. Family values are not limited to nuclear families; they are an important foundation for any kind of family or close group of people. Find out more about family values below and how you can develop stronger bonds with your own family members.

What are Family Values?

Family values comprise beliefs, ethics, priorities, and worldviews that form the core of a family and affect how family members interact with the world. Family values influence the choices and lifestyles of daily members in daily activities, education, friendship, relationships, and religion.

All families have values of some kind, but not all families are aware of their values or work to cultivate particular values over others. Some family ethics can be unhelpful and harmful, such as addiction or neglect; others can be consciously enhanced, such as commitment and honesty.

Why are Family Values Important?

When we think of the phrase “family values”, the idea of a nuclear family comes to mind for most people. Perhaps, that’s because many people were brought up in this culture or that this conservative culture is still the norm for many, but families are changing in the 21st century.

Due to economic factors and the broad acceptance of lgbt+ rights, families are changing. Non-married households are practically the norm these days, and there are many more diverse families out there. Family values are still needed to deepen family bonds and grow collectively.

Values for Families

Some families will have a pre-disposition to some values over others; this might be due to the personalities in families and the natural values of individuals, but it might also be down to inherited values. Find more of these core values in this book of bible verses about family.

Empathy

As human beings, we tend to live subjectively, thinking about our own gratification first. While this is natural to an extent, we need to develop empathy in order to connect with other people and animals. Train family members to value emotions and to consider another point of view.

Connection

It is important for family members to bond and deepen their relationships. Without time for bonding, families can become solitary and remote from each other over time, leading to disconnection in later life. Cultivate a value of connection by creating quality family time.

Honesty

It is often said that honesty is the best policy, and while this is often the case, it isn’t always easy. The reason honesty is such an important value is that it relates to trust, which is crucial for strong and lasting relationships. Encourage honesty by modelling it and creating consequences.

Love

Affection and attachment are the forces that keep families together no matter what form they take; it is also important for creating a happy and supportive family environment. Cultivate the value of love in your family by exchanging gifts, and encouraging physical and verbal affection.
