Your bedroom should put you to sleep, but not because of how boring it is. An old-fashioned bedroom can very quickly start to feel uncomfortable and unsuited to the kind of life that you want to lead. But what do you do to update a bedroom that’s starting to look a little long in the tooth? Here are some refreshing ideas of changes you can make to update your bedroom, bring it into the 2020s, and make it much better suited to its purpose.

A new splash of color
Of course, one of the easiest ways to change the entire vibe and look of a bedroom is to change its color scheme. This can be done in a variety of ways, from repainting the walls to using wallpaper and even using things like throws and new sheets to change the accent colors. Look up some of the bedroom color schemes shown at Veranda. It’s important to choose a scheme that fits the vibe you want, whether you want an airy, bright feeling in the bedroom or a richer sense of comfort and luxury.
A different approach to light
Just as important as color, and often very tied to how it is used, is light in the bedroom. There are different ways to use light. If you use a brighter or more pastel color scheme to make the room feel more spring or summer, then you should maximize your natural light by, for instance, using thinner and lighter window treatments and using mirrors to help bounce the night around the room. If you’re aiming for more cozy autumn and winter schemes, then using accent lights of warm color temperatures and help you maximize the comfort of the room’s look.
Changing the bed and bedding
The first priority of your bedroom is, naturally, to help you have a good night’s sleep. Changing your mattress and bed can make it a lot more comfortable, especially if your current ones have started to show their age and don’t offer as much support anymore.
If you decide to change your mattress, pay attention to what position you spend most of the night in. If you are a back sleeper, you will have different needs than a side sleeper, for example. If you are a side sleeper, you will want to find the best bed for side sleeper. Conversely, if you are a back sleeper, you may not require as high or as firm of a mattress.
New sheets and duvet covers can also maximize the sleepiness of your bed. The comfort of new sheets that haven’t aged is one thing, but you might also want to update to more breathable fabrics such as cotton if you’ve previously been sleeping in synthetic sheets only. Don’t underestimate the effectiveness of some new bedding.
Sharpen up your storage
Aside from the bed, the furniture that tends to take up the bulk of the bedroom (and offer it the most practical utility) is the storage spaces you install. Drawers and closets make up the majority of these, and opting for more contemporary replacements as shown at ModernDigs can help you make a big difference in the feel and practicality of the room. This can include new designs with no external hardware, slimming their profile down and making them more minimalist, or it can include those that incorporate more organized spaces inside so they can better help you manage the clutter that might otherwise build up inside your storage.
Updating its accessories
Bedrooms are the perfect space to accessorize because not all of the space in there has to be for practical purposes. Adding new wall art, photo galleries, or other wall accessories can help you create a fresh contemporary feature wall. You also have space on your drawers, bedside, and perhaps some shelves for decorating purposes, as well. You can get very expressive with your personality and your style in your bedroom, and it can even be the perfect place to incorporate your hobby into your decor as shown at Debonis Homes.
Switching surfaces
If you want to really change both the look and the tactile feel of the room, then you should be looking at the surfaces that serve as the foundation. For the floors, switching from carpets to hardwood or vinyl can help you modernize it quickly. Similarly, rather than switching wallpapers, you can look at cladding options for your walls as shown at Parklex. The surfaces of the room might be what’s holding it back in terms of modernizing its style. If you feel like bare floors are a little too naked looking, don’t be afraid to accent it with a rug, too.
With the tips above, hopefully, you can bring some life back into your bedroom and make it the peaceful, sleep-catalyzing space that you need it to be. All rooms need a little update now and then and, as practical as it is, the bedroom needs the right style to fit our needs, too.
