Let’s be honest – a lot of things get a little more difficult in life as soon as you have children. Going out anywhere takes two, three, maybe four times longer. But you go through it because staying in is a lot harder, too. And while every parent wouldn’t change their little ones for the world, the reality is that in some life scenarios – such as moving house – having kids brings extra pressures. With this in mind, let’s take a look at a few different things you can try while navigating a home move with toddlers and small children.

Remember it’s stressful for them, too!

First and foremost, moving home is incredibly stressful at the best of times for adults. But it’s also a time of great change for your kids, and they could be feeling the pressure, too. It’s vital to involve them in the move and let them know what is going on. Make sure you start talking to them a month or two beforehand, so they get a chance to get used to the idea. It might be worth going on a recce to the new place and surrounding areas, too, to let them know about the fun they can have in local parks and playgrounds.

Get them involved

It’s also a good idea to get your kids involved in things like decoration. If they can choose their bedroom paint colors, for example, it can help them start feeling excited about the change.

Get some help

Before you have kids, you might consider saving yourself some money and doing the removals yourself. However, once your bundles of joy have arrived, it’s almost always best to get the right kind of help. As parksmoving.com/ point out, professional removal companies can help you manage the day and keep things as organized as possible. And while the professionals handle the boxes and furniture, you can concentrate on making the big day as fun as possible for the kids.

Be careful who you choose for a moving company though. You want someone with a great reputation and good reviews on Google and Yelp. If you are in the Atlanta, GA area – one home mover company that has quality workers, service and great reviews is Atlanta Home Movers. And while the professionals handle the boxes and furniture, you can concentrate on making the big day as fun as possible for the kids.

Keep stress to yourself

We all know that moving house is one of the most stressful events life can throw at you. But given that your kids will be watching you like a hawk for your emotions and responses, it’s vital to keep that stress hidden. Kids always take their cues from their parents and will end up just as stressed as you – if not more so. Be positive about the move, keep your emotions in check, and there is more chance of your little ones doing the same.

Kids first, you second

Next, ensure that your kids' possessions are all packed up and labelled, ready for action as soon as you arrive at the new home. The quicker they have access to their favorite toys and books, the easier it will be for them to relax and make their own space in their new room.

Prepare some food

Finally, don’t forget about nourishment, as discussed over at beafunmum.com/. It’s a good idea to cook a casserole or stew the night before the move, to ensure that the kids – and you – get some good food into you after what will be a very long day. Bring plenty of snacks along for the ride, too, to ensure that they don’t suffer from empty tummies – which will only increase their stress levels. Congratulations on your move!
