Make a wrapping station in your laundry room example of gift wrap holder made of elastic and safety pins neededinthehome

Do you have a wrapping station at your house? To prevent overwhelm this holiday season, it is best to wrap gifts you have purchased for others as they come in your door. In our house with eight children this is also a must to prevent peeking! Here is how to make a wrapping station in your laundry room or wherever you want to put it!

Note: Some links in this post are affiliate links, which means I receive a commission if you make a purchase. Affiliate relationships include, but are not limited to Amazon Associates, Walmart.com, and Etsy.

Gather the Materials

Be prepared before you start so you can maximize your time and get this project done in no time! Everything we are doing is easy to take down when all the gifts are wrapped for the holiday and you can pack it away with your holiday items to use again next year!

I personally like to use my laundry room as a multi-purpose room. It is used for sewing, to store pet supplies (cat food and water dishes up where my little dog can't reach them), the kitty litter, thawing rabbit water bottles (we live in Wisconsin, winters are cold!) It holds puzzles, finger paint and play dough out of the reach of my toddler until I can supervise. We keep the cleaning supplies in there, my mother-in-law's Tupperware to go home with her, the trash bags, extra paper products, flashlights, batteries, tax receipts, product information, tablecloths, matches, sunscreens and bug sprays, you name it, it's probably in there! So why not use it for wrapping gifts? Ours has a door that can be shut. We don't have a lock, but we hang a sign on the doorknob when we are wrapping.

Materials

  • 3/4 inch elastic band (I used 4 yards)
  • Safety pins
  • 3M Command Hooks
  • Gallon Ziploc baggies
  • gift wrap
  • bows
  • scissors
  • gift bags
  • tissue paper
  • gift tags
  • scotch tape

Cut The Elastic

Decide how many rolls you want to display and lay them on a flat surface. Put them tightly together horizontally. Now put the elastic band over them vertically to go across the top of them and then take that measurement times three. Cut it. Make one more to hold up the other side. For mine, I wanted one wrap to hang in front of the other, so I needed two of them.

Pin The Elastic

Now fold each length in half. Starting from the bottom (the folded end) of one length, work your way up and put a safety pin across it as often as you want to loosely hold your rolls in place. Safety pin the top pieces shut.

With the second (and more if you have them) piece do the same thing but be sure you are lining it up next to your first one so that you are pinning in approximately the same places.

Hang The Elastic Bands

If you have a wire shelf hanging above where you want them, unpin the top of your elastic, pull one side of the elastic up and over one of the wires and pin them together. Decide where you want the other elastic so that it's not too far away. Pin the remaining elastic(s) around the wire in the same way as you did with the first.

If you do not have a wire shelf, get a set of two command hooks that can hold up to 5 pounds, rather than 3. Place your command hooks high enough for the elastic to stretch down as more wrap is added. Then hang the bottom (folded end) of the elastic up on the hooks.

Slide Gift Wrap Into Elastic

Now you can slide the gift wrap into the elastic by putting the wrap through a hole between pins on one elastic and sliding it to the other elastic and putting it through those holes, be sure it looks somewhat balanced. You may need to go up or down a hole to achieve this.

Stick Command Hooks On The Wall

One of my favorite Christmas gifts is 3M Command Hooks! I am absolutely serious! I use them all over the house! Figure out where you will hang the following items: scissors (hang these higher if you have little ones around), bag of gift tags,  bag of bows, scotch tape, and gift bag (which may be filled with gift boxes, gift bags and tissue paper). If you like to have ribbons, you may want to try looping elastic through all of the holes in the spools and hanging them.

Use the command hooks as directed and stick to your walls in the right places. The nice thing about command hooks is that they pull off very nicely at the end of the season to not damage your walls.

Hang The Ziploc Bags On The Command Hooks

After I had my gift wrap in the loops and knew how far down it would hang, I placed my command hook under it. I created a hole in the center of the bag by pushing the plastic bag over the hook hard enough to pop a hole. Then I hung my bag and put the items in the bag.

Hang Scissors And A Gift Bag

Find a place up a little higher to hang your scissors if you have little ones that might enter the room. Hang your larger gift bag that holds tissue paper, empty gift boxes and gift bags.

Stand Back And Admire Your Work

It may not be perfect, but it's functional! Everything is in it's place and ready to be used when the next gift comes through your door!

Keep The Washer or Dryer Top Clear For Wrapping

Be sure to keep the washer or dryer top clear to use as a place to wrap. For me it's no problem with the washer since I use a top loader. (See the plastic bag tied above it? That's our lint bag! Yep, now you know I am your true friend, I showed you my dirty lint bag!)

Hang The “Do Not Disturb” Sign

Be sure to hang up a sign to warn others not to come in while you are wrapping!
