There’s nothing more terrifying than having a pest or pests infiltrate your home. Your home suddenly feels like a battleground and a place that you fear at every turn of the corner.

From the visual appearance of a pest to the sounds of them underneath floorboards, in your walls or above you in the ceiling fixtures, it’s not a nice experience to have in your home.

If you’re looking to create a pest-free home environment, then here are some helpful tips to keep those nasty critters and furries away from your home.

Maintain a clean environment at all times

When it comes to creating an environment that pests will hate, it’s best to try and keep your home as clean as possible. While that’s not always doable if you have a busy life and house, the more you can keep clean, the better.

That’s why it’s worth setting yourself up with a cleaning rota and that this rota involves everyone within the household. It’s not just one person who should be the default cleaner or the one responsible for making sure the home is in good condition.

By having a rota or schedule in place, you’ll be able to see who has done what duties or tasks around the home in order to keep it clean. Be sure to focus on areas where food is regularly consumed or stored as this tends to be a hot area for pests to gravitate towards.

Keep your garbage locked or tightly sealed

When it comes to garbage, it’s a big appeal for any pests whether the trash cans themselves are outside or inside. Ideally, you want an interior bin that is tightly sealed or activated automatically when opening and shutting it.

For the outside bins, you want these to be in a locked container ideally so that it won’t get knocked over easily by any pests or vermin in general. You could lock the garbage can itself depending on what type of disposal you have.

Disposing of the trash should be done regularly so to avoid anything overfilling and spilling excess food and waste onto your pathways or inside in the kitchen or utility.

Be mindful of how much waste there is in your trash cans and get rid of it from the property as soon as possible to avoid a build-up.

Seal entry and exit points around the home

To help keep the pests out and to avoid them getting around the home via other means, it’s a good idea to seal entry and exit points with whatever you can. Pests are incredibly versatile with some being able to get into the home through the tiniest of gaps and cracks. Therefore, it’s a good idea to go around your home looking for these areas in particular.

Make sure you’ve done your research on what would be the best material for this. From caulk to weatherstripping, you’ve got a lot of choice but it’s important it’s done carefully and reinforced where possible to make it impossible for pests to get in or out.

Regularly inspect the property as a whole

It’s always worthwhile to spend the time, inspecting the property as a whole and to highlight any areas of concern that might need investigating further. While you could probably investigate it yourself, some people don’t like dealing with any potential pest problems and would rather let pest control deal with the problem instead.

However, in order for you to get pest control in to do the dirty work for you, you’ll want to first look out for signs that pests are present or have been in and around your home. Look out for droppings and any other visual or audible signs of pests nearby.

Maintain the yard

Finally, make sure you’re maintaining your exterior spaces in order to extend the pest-free environment from just your interiors.

Clearing up clutter in the yard, as well as tackling the overgrown shrubs and hedges, will certainly ensure you reduce the risks of pests in and around your home.

Try to make a conscious effort to maintain the yard on a regular basis, again having a list of to-do’s for the yard so that you stay on top of it. Be sure to keep any shrubs far away from the property to avoid pests getting close to the property.

Creating a pest-free environment when it comes to your home is important. So with that being said, make sure to follow these tips and help you and your household deter those pests from your property.
