What you need:

Here is what you need to make a glass jar with lid gift and a candy bowl gift mostly (except for one item) from items you can find at the Dollar Tree store or at dollartree.com.

  • Two packages of Smarties candies, which are an excellent choice because they are gluten-free and peanut free, so they should be fine for someone who is diabetic or a person who has some food allergies.
  • One roll of decorative Holiday Ribbon, I would choose red or green because 'tis the season!
  • One package of plastic straws (you only need one for the gift, so your family gets the rest! Yay, a bonus!
  • A glass jar or mug with a handle
  • A mayonnaise jar lid (this item is not from Dollar Tree, it is a recycled or upcyled item from my home.  It was on a mayonnaise jar.)
  • Choose a decorative plastic candy container with a lid. I chose one with cute little snowman heads on it. The jar that I chose is clear plastic, with a sealing lid.

Recycled Lids

With recycled lids, you just have to try them on your jar to see what fits best.  There are some that are too large or too small.  When you find the right lid, take a drill and put a straw sized hole in the top somewhat near the center.  Sometimes this does crack the lid you are trying to put the hole into.  Try again on another lid until you are successful.  If you do not have a drill or would prefer to purchase them, you can buy them at my Etsy shop.

Fill the containers

Take each empty container and place a bag full of candy in each.  You may arrange the candy to look pretty or just dump it in.  Place the lid on each container and tie the ribbon around the container.  If you tie the ribbon tight enough, you will not need to glue it in place.  Place a straw in the glass mug.  Here is a YouTube video to show how it is done.
