Keep Your Home Safe This Winter winter home scene trees with snow neededinthehome

Your home is somewhere you should be able to retreat to when the day is done, and if you aren’t careful, many different things can affect your home in the winter. Obviously, you want to keep your home safe this winter, so it’s essential to keep up the maintenance on your house, but what extra precautions are needed when the temperatures start to drop, and the elements start knocking at your door?

This is a contributed post and my referral affiliate links are below. If you click through and take action, I will be compensated at no extra cost to you. My full disclosure is here. Thank you!

Pipes

One of the leading causes for disruption in your home during the winter months is frozen pipes, it’s something many of us forget about because, well, our water just runs freely, doesn’t it? But in the winter that can be quite the opposite if the temperatures where you live drop below zero. This is why it’s always recommended that you protect your water pipes, especially the outside ones. There are many options for covering your pipes, including foam and heating wire. Just visit your local hardware store and ask them for the options they will be more than happy to help.

Clear your path

If you’re lucky (or unlucky) enough to have a regular sprinkling of snow around Christmas time, then you will be well aware of the risks of trying to walk along paths and driving along driveways in a few feet of snow, it’s not fun, and it can also be pretty dangerous, however festive it looks. It’s highly recommended that you have a snow removal service number at the ready so you can quickly and efficiently remove any snow that’s in your way, and go about your day with little delay!

Roof

Having weak spots in your roof during the milder months is an inconvenience, but having a weakness during the winter with more rain and frost is a nightmare! Make sure you check the roof before the nights draw in and the frost arrives, you will thank yourself later when you’re in a warm, dry house! Since it’s 2019 as well, you could also get a drone expert in to save you having to climb a ladder and getting into any trouble.

Seal Windows and Doors

Imagine settling down for the evening and the wind picks up, then realizing that there’s a gap in the seal around your bedroom window, which is not only causing a great noise but letting a cold wind into your home, it’s always best to check the seals on your doors and windows periodically to make sure you don’t get any windy surprises! Stormproof door seals and draft excluders are always a good idea when you’re likely to have some stormy weather in the winter.

Whichever way you look at it you can’t be too careful when it comes to winter-proofing your home, the little things add up, and even if you expect a mild winter you will be glad you considered all aspects of keeping the elements where they belong, outside! Preparation is vital, and looking after your home is always an excellent investment.
