3 Simple Steps Towards Achieving Your Dreams person going upstairs shoes on concrete stairway neededinthehome

Have you got a big dream in life that has somehow just become permanently shelved? It could be a long held ambition to start up your own business, a goal of travelling and seeing the world or even something like renovating your bathroom. An idea that you return to time and again and yet never seems to get any closer to turning into reality. A New Year's Resolution which crops up every year but never develops into action. There are obviously some roadblocks preventing you from getting started on achieving your dreams. Identifying these obstacles and finding ways to overcome them is the first step towards making these ambitions really start to happen.

This is a contributed post and my referral affiliate links are below. If you click through and take action, I will be compensated at no extra cost to you. My full disclosure is here. Thank you!

Begin With A Small Step

The art of planning has a lot to do with letting go of self-limiting behaviors so that you are no longer standing in your own way. Often, when we have a big dream, the scale of it can seem a little overwhelming in the midst of our already busy lives. We see the end goal relative to our current position and feel helpless thinking about the distance. Breaking your ambitions down into smaller, achievable steps is crucial here. You may not be able to run a business empire overnight, but you can develop an action plan towards launching a company. Taking the first few initial steps creates a positive momentum which can break the mental block and help to stop procrastinating. Consider that the first move – however small – is a movement where the doing is actually more important than the result. What are the baby steps which can move you more towards where you want to be? This could be researching how to write a business plan, finding sector-specific funding from a source like BSF, or creating a savings target to give yourself some start-up capital. Forget waiting for the perfect time – it will never come. Make a move in the here and now, no matter what it is, and you can figure out the rest as you go.

Narrow Your Focus

When it comes to dreaming big, sometimes the issue is that we're trying to achieve too many things at once. Yes, it would be great to finally write that novel, shed a few pounds with a new workout regime and go for that promotion at work, but do you really need to do them all at once? You only have so much time and energy, and making big life changes takes a lot of focus. Help yourself out by picking just one thing to achieve first. Achievement is actually a lot about compromise, and one of the first has to be prioritizing your main goal above everything else. Ask yourself what truly matters most to you and make it happen. There will be plenty of time to ride the wave of your success and channel it into something else further down the line.

Let Go Of Perfect

The idea of things being ‘perfect' often appears to be part of the ambition, but secretly, it's usually just another way to avoid making things happen. Deep down, you know that there's no such thing as perfect, so stop using it as a barrier to doing anything. Embracing failure is absolutely a part of achieving what you want in life. It's more than okay to make mistakes – in fact, these are the most valuable learning opportunities we could wish for. If something goes wrong, take the lesson but don't dwell on it. The idea of perfect is often a defense against making mistakes. Teach yourself to think of mistakes as absolutely necessary and they no longer seem as paralyzing.
