When it comes to looking after your home, you are going to find that there are a lot of approaches you can take to this. As it turns out, protecting the home is something that you should be able to focus on and achieve relatively easily. As long as you are aware of a few key things, it’s something that you are going to find relatively simple to turn into a reality. And that will mean that you can enjoy the home so much more for what it is as well.

In this post, we’ll take a look at what protecting your home really needs to look like, including all of the main things that you are going to want to think about. If you can get the following right, you should find that you are going to notice a huge difference. Let’s take a look.

Understanding Risk

The most effective protection begins with a clear-eyed look at what you’re actually protecting against. For most people, the biggest risks to their home are not actually dramatic break-ins or rare disasters, but much more everyday issues. That could be anything from water damage to fire and power loss, and minor theft for example. These are the kinds of things that are causing damage over time.

Of course, there might be certain elements in your environment that will affect the risks your home faces. If you are near trees, then you are going to have different risks to a home in an urban area. A family with kids has different concerns than someone who is living alone. Protection is not one size fits all, and you’ll have to think about the context of your home if you are to protect it properly and effectively.

So make sure that you consider your risk, understand your specific vulnerabilities, and stop wasting money on things that look protective when they are not relevant to your situation. This is a great start to making your home genuinely more secure.

Physical Security As A Baseline

The physical security side of things should be the absolute minimum that you achieve in your home if you want to protect it properly. As long as you have done this right, you should find that you are going to be able to really notice a huge difference to how it works, and that you are going to feel a lot more secure in your home on the whole. There are of course a lot of different sides to physical security that you will want to bear in mind.

For instance, you should focus primarily on the locks, doors, windows and lighting in particular. Solid exterior doors will help a lot, as will properly installed deadbolts and window locks. It’s also a good idea to make sure you have strong visibility around entry points. Motion lights and visible cameras can deter opportunistic crime, especially when combined with a lived-in appearance.

Physical security also works best when it is simple and consistent. It’s much more effective to always use a cheap lock than to never use an expensive smart system. Most often, protection fails at the human level – rushed mornings, unlocked doors, ignored alerts and the like – rather than due to poor or faulty equipment.

Maintenance As Protection

A lot of people fail to realise that maintenance is actually a powerful form of protection in itself. This is actually one of the least appreciated aspects of home protection, and it’s something that you are going to want to think about if you are keen on trying to protect your home a lot more effectively and powerfully. Small problems that go unchecked become expensive emergencies very quickly, and this is something that you are going to find hugely important all in all.

For instance, cleaning gutters will prevent water damage. Servicing your heating systems reduces the risk of fire and winter failures, as well as helping you to keep the damp out. And replacing worn seals keeps moisture, pests and drafts out too. Checking your smoke detectors, co alarms and the like are going to literally save lives. Plus, if you are doing all of this, you are likely going to save on home insurance, which is another important element of protecting your home in the long run.

On the whole, a well-maintained home is a quieter, safer, and more resilient one. Neglect creates weak points and weak points are where problems tend to occur.

Focus On Fire & Water

Statistically speaking, but also financially, fire and water are much more of a problem compared to burglary and other such rarities. But because they feel a little less controllable, they often receive a lot less attention. The truth however is that you need to make sure you are protecting against fire most of all. That means incorporating fire extinguishers and the like, but also focusing on safe electrical work, responsible use of heaters and candles, and proper storage of flammable materials, as well as having clear escape routes. It’s also about knowing how to respond in the first minutes after a fire breaks out.

When it comes to water protection, the tasks are a little different, but no less important. They include monitoring for leaks, knowing where your main shutoff valve is, maintaining appliances, being aware of drainage around your home and so on. A slow leak can do more damage than a break-in, and it often goes unnoticed until the repair cost is huge – and unavoidable.

So make sure that you are aware of all this, and that you are doing all you can to protect your home effectively. You’ll find it really makes a huge difference to your experience of being in the home.
